SOLUTIONS
Stopping Food Wastage on a Global Scale |
Better food date labels -
a study conducted in the United Kingdom found that around one-fifth of food thrown out in households was incorrectly perceived as being out of date due to confusing labels. Reducing portion sizes in restaurants - Restaurants that put out lots of food onto the plate that ends up not eaten and thrown away could be found and spoken to about possibly serving smaller portion sizes. Launching awareness campaigns - By spreading awareness more people understand why food wastage is such a big problem and then they will be more careful and watch what they are throwing away and how much they are buying. Recycle food waste - making a plan B. Instead of throwing away food we don’t use we could easily turn that food from waste into edible food. The food that was once a meal can now be turned into a different one. You can easily google these ideas. Teaming with Supermarkets - Having sections in supermarkets that sell the food they were going to throw out (like bruised apples and small bananas) were they sell them cheaper. After the day has finished supermarkets could then collect the food they were going to throw out and give it away to organisations like Food Bank, Food Rescue, etc. who can then spread the food around to the people that need it most. |
How Can You Work to Stop Food Wastage Near You? |
Getting the word out is the most important step in making a difference. Making sure people are aware of the consequences of wasting food and are more cautious not to over buy when purchasing food. This doesn't mean you can't pig out with snacks every now and then, but over eating and wasting food constantly will make a bad impact, especially if everyone does it. Making sure people are aware that the food they are wasting could be eaten by another person who hasn’t eaten a proper meal in a long time.
